Apparently, it has to do with power supply and some solutions used in the ADC stage. It has AL24 processing which is basically a resolution converter that up-calculates any incoming signal to 24bit resolution. The Tascam MD is a big surprise to me though. Apart from being reliable and having balanced input and output section, it still has average converters and op-amps.

As you know, mostly all MD decks support 20bit or 24bit resolution in playback and some even when recording. So it is possible that prerecorded discs sound better than the recordings made on some decks. The differences were in that the ES used converters of better quality as well as higher quality OP-AMPs, capacitors, power transformers and sampling rate converter. The type-R used a newer generation processor that was now twice as fast and a new intelligent bit reallocation algorithm that assessed whether which bit was more important based on enveloping of the entire frequency range. It was much more advanced yes but not enough to make a cheap type-R deck sound better than an expensive 4.

Apart from the Onkyo, there are no other Hi-MD decks unfortunately. I always hoped that Sony might make their final and best MD deck - which I call "MDS-JAES" but it never saw the light of the day. I have no doubt the Sony outperforms the Kenwood. The Kenwoods of the DM range were not all that special though the DMF line was much better. What do you think about pre-recorded MDs? I found this ranking list on eBay believe it or not! Some guy was selling an MD deck and attached this to his add. Apparently, it is a ranking list from German Stereo magazine. The decks are ranked from the best to the worst and contains all the decks ever reviewed by the Stereo magazine. My German is a little rusty but I have translated it for you so enjoy!. But I did read some reviews of it and the reviewers were very pleased with the performance. What is surprising to me that the JA30ES is ranked above JA20ES which was a newer and type-R machine.

Yeah, when you think about it, there is nothing on the market you can use for home recording now days. Say you want to record a radio boradcast or a CD. What are you going to use? You can get a pro deck that uses HDD or flash memory but these often costr an arm and a leg and the user interface is less than intuitive to an average user. I was wondering what makes a good MD deck. Is it mainly to do with internal processing or the output stage? Well, a good MD deck has better DAC and ADC chips or even the same ones but the analog inout and output stage is a lot more advanced as is the power supply.

Mostly all DACs of today accept 16, 20 and 24bit signals except for the older TDA designs. I guess Im going to have to try hooking my DAC up to my Denon and see how it sounds.
